Do I need to have an undergraduate degree in Islamic Studies to apply for the MA Islamic Studies programme?
No, you can apply for the MA Islamic Studies programme even if your undergraduate degree is in a different field, however based on your application you may be advised to take some foundation modules in Islamic studies deemed necessary.
Do I need any background in the Arabic language before I join the programme?
No, it is not necessary for you to know the Arabic language, however it would be an added advantage since it would allow you to refer to the primary sources for your research and assignments.
When does the course begin?
The MA programme normally begins in October and ends in September the following year. Each academic year is divided into two semesters:
Semester 1 – October to January
Semester 2 – February to June
Dissertation Writing – July to September
How many days a week will I have to attend classes?
At least three evenings per week for the full time programme from 6.00 pm – 9.00 pm.
Is the MA programme offered on a part-time basis?
Yes, students can complete the MA programme on a part-time basis in within two years including the dissertation.
Can I get an extension on submission of my dissertation if I am enrolled on a full time programme and have completed all my modules?
Yes, submission is extendable to maximum two years after the start of the course for full time students and up to four years for part-time students.
Can I change from full-time to part-time?
Yes, you can change from a full-time programme to part-time programme before the end of the first semester.
Can I study the MA course online?
Yes, the MA courses are provided by the distance learning department; please visit their web site for more information.
What language is the course taught in?
The medium of instruction is English.
Is Arabic language taught as part of the MA programme?
No, Arabic language is not taught as a part of the programme however anyone interested in learning the language can enroll for the classes offered within the BA programme.
Does the Islamic College provide any scholarship for home/ overseas students?
Currently the Islamic College does not have any sponsorship available.
Does the Islamic College provide accommodation for overseas students?
No, the Islamic College does not provide accommodation facilities for its students.
How is the Masters course assessed?
Assessments for the MA programme normally include assignments, class presentation, book reviews and in rare cases examination.
Are all the modules taken at the Islamic College or at MU?
All learning sessions are arranged by the Islamic College and would take place at the Islamic College.
