ISC 118 – Islamic Ritual Law
Syllabus
The syllabus will cover the key areas of ritual law, including:
• Ritual purity: types of water and other purifiers (mutahhirat), ritual uncleanliness (najasah), ablution (wudu), dry ablution (tayammum), ritual bath (ghusl)
• Ritual prayer: call to prayer (adhan and iqamah), daily prayer (salat), supererogatory prayer (nafilah), rulings related to a traveller, congregational and Friday prayer
• Fasting (siyam), what invalidates it and those who are exempted from it, moon sighting
• Pilgrimage (hajj), its rituals (manasik) and capability for performance (istita’ah)
• Alms (zakat and khums)
Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy
Assessment for this module is by presentation. The 20 minute presentations will consist of comparative studies on specific issues related to Islamic ritual law and will be accompanied by a 1,000 word write-up .
