Neither prose nor poetry, the mesmerising verses of the Qur’an have been recited for centuries in the Muslim world by master reciters (qurrā’) based on a system of melodic modes (maqāmāt).
In this presentation, Sayed Jalal Masoomi, a master reciter of the Qur’an, will present different styles of recitation of this holy book and will delineate the appropriate styles for each passage in the Qur’an. He will also examine the traditional jurisprudential resistance to the idea of melodic recitation and will take questions from the audience.
A master reciter of the Holy Qur’an, Sayed Jalal Masoomi has held numerous training seminars and trained hundreds of reciters in the United Kingdom. He has an MA in international relations and diplomacy and is currently a DProf candidate at The Islamic College.
